Anders chydenius books

Anders Chydenius (1729–1803) is among the central figures of Finnish and Swedish history of the 18th century. He was a broad-minded politician and writer, whose goal was a society based on liberty, equality and respect for human rights. Even on a European level, he was an early advocate of democratic ideals.

He is most remembered as an outspoken defender of freedom of trade and industry, the "Adam Smith of the North". He and his brother Samuel were taught privately by their father and then they went to Oulu grammar school. Two books on Chydenius’s contributions to an open society and freedom of information have been published recently, by the relatively new Anders Chydenius Foundation; and these books (in Finnish and Swedish) include very short English summaries. In Bruno Suviranta’s review of Chydenius’s best-known work, The National Gain, he described what tied together Chydenius’s writings on political economy as “all founded on the same constant idea of freedom.” Charles Evans wrote that “he expressed a classical liberalism as radical as any penned by familiar [contemporary] liberals.” The book consists of eleven of the most important writings of Anders Chydenius, an eighteenth century pioneer of freedom and democracy. Thematically they touch upon subject areas such as the freedom of trade and industry, emigration, the monetary system of the Swedish realm in the eighteenth century, the freedom of the press (or as Chydenius said: the freedom of writing and printing), the Anticipating the Wealth of nations the selected works of Anders Chydenius, 1729-1803 This edition was published in 2011 by Routledge in New York.
